The following list is a general list you can use for your students. Recommended grade levels are also included. Remember to check with your school for any restrictions.
You can also use Library Thing in conjunction with this list to have your students keep track of their reading. http://librarything.com. You can also use the step-by-step instructions provided below.
Step-by-step instructions:
Log on to http://librarything.com and click the “Join Now” button in the upper right hand corner of the screen.
The next thing you will want to do is add to your library. To do so you must click on the “Add Books” tab in the top center of the page. You have the option of adding from a collection, Searching, adding from the Library of Congress, manually adding books, or importing them.
From here you will want to set up/create a group for your students to participate. You will need to click the "Start a Group" tab in the upper right hand corner. This will bring you to the next page where you will put in all your information for your group and select create. The screen shot below is my example.
This is a great option because it allows you to set privacy settings so that only the members of your group, in this case your students, will be able to see and post comments in the post section. This option is great for assigning students to literacy circles. It will give them the opportunity to enhance their collaboration skills as well as their technology skills. You could even create groups and assign students to particular groups as part of the assignment.
Set you location by clicking the "Local" Tab. This will allow the website to personalize information for you. For example in the picture I took, of the Local tab, you can see that the website gave me information to multiple libraries and bookstores, as well as giving me information about upcoming events. This is great in the event that you want to schedule a field trip to meet an author that is coming into the area or go to your local library.
This site also has an option that allows you to connect your account with social media such as Facebook and Twitter. Be sure to check with your local school board to request prior approval, if needed.
You can start exploring your new library and start adding to your collection.
